Where Does All The Money Go To?
Some people have been asking the question- Where does all the money the PTO raises go to? We also hear the question – Why so many fundraisers? The PTO’s primary function is to support the school. We rely on the financial support of the parents to fund the programs within the approved budget. Our 2015-2016 year budget totals $274,450. This budget translates to about $600 per child in tuition reduction. We generate this revenue through our three core fundraising events – Innisbrook Guild Wrapping sales; the St. James Bazaar; and the St. James Auction and Gala. Unfortunately the needs of the school and the programs we have established requires us to have additional fundraising events throughout the year. These include the restaurant nights for example. Though the revenue generated from the restaurant nights is small in most cases, the intent of the restaurant nights is also to promote fellowship within the St. James community and help students and parents connect with one another. Other revenue is generated through the gift card program, box-tops, logo ware and others.
With this revenue, the PTO supports the school through a variety of programs. Large scale expenditures in past years include resurfacing the gym floor by stripping the surface, sanding the floor, resurfacing it and repainting the floor. The PTO paid for the painting and minor renovations of Heller Hall a few years ago. The PTO was the source of funding the school used to implement the school’s technology enhancements such as the iPads, the ActivBoards, Apple TVs and Wi-Fi in the three buildings, as well as other technologies. The PTO funds were also used to implement the Lab Learner Science curriculum. These “big ticket” items has helped contribute to the success of the school and has made us competitive with our sister Catholic schools in the area.
In addition to these items, the PTO’s Budget provided funding for a variety of programs. These include:
$20,000 for Teacher and Staff’s Bonus;
$15,000 for Technology;
$5,000 for the Library for book purchases;
$3,500 for the Music Program;
$4,500 for Tuition Assistance Scholarships, which supplements the Diocese and Parish Financial Aid;
$5,500 for Continuing Education expenses for teachers;
$4,700 for Classroom Supplies ($200 per teacher);
$7,500 for Hospitality expenses such as Open Houses, Teacher Appreciation Week, lunch for faculty and staff professional development days;
$3,000 for Spirit Day;
$5,250 for Field Trip expenses ($250 per classroom); and
$2,500 for Field Day.
The budget also included many other programs to support the school. The PTO Budget is approved by the full PTO membership in our Annual Meeting each May. Once the budget is approved, the PTO Treasurer reports each month to the full PTO Board of Directors the revenue and expenditures for that month and the Board votes to approve the Monthly Financial Statements. All PTO members are welcome to attend the PTO Board of Director Meetings each month. We distribute a copy of the full budget and the expenses to date. Our ultimate goal is to provide support to the school through a variety of means and we could not do this without the generosity of all the parents and donors to the St. James PTO.
If you have any questions regarding the PTO Budget, please contact the Steve Barch, PTO Treasurer or Jim Simonson, PTO President at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We hope you were able to attend Kirk Martin’s talk on “Celebrating Calm” a couple of weeks ago. A huge thank you to Debbie Latessa for organizing this wonderful evening. If you were unable to attend, the PTO purchased a set of Kirk’s CD’s. These are in the school library and can be checked out anytime!
