Religion                 Friday, May 29, 2020

1.  Let us remember all our intentions as we say an Our Father and pause to ask the Holy Spirit to guide us. Pentecost is this Sunday!  Also, say the prayer above during this time.

Read the letter below.  Also, look for an email from school to watch the Talent Show and enjoy your last day as a Fifth Grader!!

                                                                                             May 29, 2020

Dear Boys and Girls,

The end of the year is finally here!  You are now technically a Sixth Grade student!!!

I will miss all of you!!!  I’m sorry we didn’t have a normal end to the year.  So many fun things get scheduled during the last few of weeks of school.  I know this hasn’t been easy on you. Be sure to thank your parents for helping you. I really believe this experience will help you moving forward.  You have learned to handle more of your own work, manage your time through trial and error and shown flexibility with learning.  In other words, you have matured.  This is always a good thing!

I think you will all do very well at St. James in the years ahead.  Please don’t hesitate to stop by my classroom.  If you ever need advice or help, my door is always open!  I’m also always available to sign recommendations for National Junior Honor Society when you need them!

Sixth Grade

Your 6th Grade teachers will post information in the next couple of weeks about what you can do this summer to get ready for the fall.  Normally, we would have had an end-of-the-year event announcing your house assignments.   Because of e-learning, this did not happen.  So, I’m guessing they will assign you at some point before school starts.  I know you are looking forward to those assignments…..the houses are a lot of fun!  Look for information about that a little later in the summer.

Math

1.  You can keep doing REFLEX from time to time to stay sharp.  I will check it periodically and change you.  You could still email me with a change request since I will still be managing your account.

2.  You can keep doing MOBY MAX Adaptive Math.  Since the problems adjust to your level, this will help you prepare for 6th Grade level work and beyond if you are presently at a higher level.

Please read the information below carefully:

Tuesday, June 9th

I will see you on Tuesday, June 9th in A Lot between 10:00 am – 12:00 pm.  You will get a bag with items you left at school and a yearbook if you ordered one.  Also, you must return some items to me.  See some info below:

·        Social Studies Textbook - Return

·        Math Textbook - Return

·        Pick up - You will also get yearbooks if you ordered them.  Yearbooks will be available on that day if you would like to purchase one for $17.00 cash

·        Extra class pictures will also be available for $11.00 cash

·        Pick up – Art projects available on a table

Lastly, I hope you have a wonderful summer!  It may be a little different than you anticipated without camps, swimming etc., but I'm sure you can be creative and enjoy some down time.  Don't forget to pray, go to Mass (Mass is starting this weekend although with limited attendance) and be kind to your family and everyone you meet!

Most sincerely,

Mrs. Terwilliger

P.S.   Watch the Talent Show today and enjoy your last day as a Fifth Grader!!

Please click here to listen to something about Vernerable Pierre Toussaint.  He was born in Haiti and lived in the U.S.   Interesting fact:  he is under consideration to become a saint.  There have not been any miracles attributed to Venerable Pierre, yet!  Let's say some special prayers for his intercession today.  Click here to read about him today.

Religion                 Thursday, May 28, 2020

1.  Let us remember all our intentions as we say an Our Father today before we begin Religion. Also, say the prayer above during this time.

2.  Pentecost Sunday:   This Sunday we celebrate Pentecost (50 days after Easter….was Easter really that long ago?), the day the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles and the birth of the Church.   Please look at the First Reading and the Gospel for Pentecost:

1st Reading      Acts of the Apostles 2:1-11.

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together.
And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were.
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.
Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem.
At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, "Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans?
Then how does each of us hear them in his own native language?
We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome,
both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God."

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 20,19-23.

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, «Peace be with you.»
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
(Jesus) said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you."
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained."

3.  Go to the Religion website (link here) and complete the Jesus’ Jigsaw under Unit 5.  I did it.   It’s kind of fun!

Chapter 24 Test Today

1.  Let us remember all our intentions as we say an Our Father today before we begin Religion and remember the Ascension of Jesus. Also, say the prayer above during this time.

2.  Ascension Thursday:  Today is an important day!  This is the day (40 days after Easter….was Easter really that long ago?) that Jesus ascended into heaven, known as Ascension Thursday. Read the beautiful psalm below, and the Gospel reading from Matthew. Pay special attention to the last line in Matthew and think about it.

Responsorial Psalm – Psalms 47:2-3, 6-7, 8-9

R. (6) God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.
All you peoples, clap your hands,
shout to God with cries of gladness,
For the LORD, the Most High, the awesome,
is the great king over all the earth.
R. God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.
God mounts his throne amid shouts of joy;
the LORD, amid trumpet blasts.
Sing praise to God, sing praise;
sing praise to our king, sing praise.
R. God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.
For king of all the earth is God;
sing hymns of praise.
God reigns over the nations,
God sits upon his holy throne.
R. God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.

Gospel – Matthew 28:16-20

The eleven disciples went to Galilee,
to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them.
When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.
Then Jesus approached and said to them,
“All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

If you did not complete the Ch. 12 Area and Volume Test, please do so now.  Please see Tuesday, May 19, 2020 for directions.

  Ch. 13-7     Use Percent

1.  Let’s go over a few definitions:

Regular price – this is the whole

Discount – this is the part saved

Sale Price – this is the part spent

When you look at a circle graph, as is illustrated on p. 428, you can see the connection between all the parts and the whole.  This is given to you as percents of the whole number.  It should be easy for you to see.

2.  Read through p. 428.  The circle graph shows you the percent of students taking certain courses.  But, you still don’t know the exact #.  You can find this out if you know the total # of students.  The example on p. 428 shows you how to do it.

3.  Finding the discount p. 429:  Read the box on p. 429.  This example shows you how to find the discount if you know the rate of discount which is the %.

4.  Try some problems in your workbook p. 153 multiples of 4.  Answers below:

Wb p. 153 multiples of evens 2-14 answers:  2) 15%, 72               4)   25%, 120      6) $600.        8) $240       10) $100       12)  $9.60       14)  $4.00

Ch. 12 RETAKE Area & Volume Test:  Check your grade on PowerSchool for yesterday’s test.  If you would like to take it again, you may.  It will be on Moby Max as “Ch. 12 RETAKE Area & Volume Test 5-19-20".  If you didn’t take yesterday’s test, you can take it and then take the RETAKE.  Either way, I will take the highest grade of both tests.

TODAY’S LESSON

Ch. 13 Lesson 13-6   Find the Percent of a Number

1.  Math textbook p. 426.  This is a very important lesson.  Learning how to find the percent of number is a skill you will be using each day as a student and as an adult.  We make many decisions based on finding the percent of a number.

a)    Tipping at a restaurant:  Customary tipping in the U.S. is 15%-20% of the total bill when you go out to dinner.  (As a former waitress, I can tell you that more than that is always appreciated!) How do you figure that out?  Well, take the total bill, including taxes, and give the waiter/waitress a tip of 15%-20% of the bill.

b)    Sale in a store:  You are thinking of buying a really nice pair of sneakers because now they are 40% off which is a pretty significant discount.  You first have to find out what is 40% of the regular price.  Once you get that number, you can subtract that amount from the regular price and you will have your sale price.

2.  Read through p. 426.  Remember I told you in class that the word “of” always means multiply?  Keep this in mind as you read through p. 426.  You can either use decimals to figure these problems out, or you can use fractions.

3.  For further explanation click here for a short video.

4.  Workbook p. 152:  Do multiples of 5 and 28 & 29-word problems.   Then, check your answers below:

Answers:  wb p. 152

   5)  21              10) 72      15) 160      20)  16       25) less than        28) 42 cards        29)  30 tickets

4.  REMEMBER YOU WILL BE GETTING A GRADE FOR PARTICPATING IN REFLEX.  Go on REFLEX three times a week and get a green light for the month of May.  I check frequently to change your facts’ assignment.  You can always email me if you need me to change you sooner!

Religion               Ch. 24        Monday, May 18, 2020

13 students did not take the Ch. 23 Religion Test assigned last Friday.  Can you please complete that today so you don't fall behind?

1.  Let us remember all our intentions, particularly our religious sisters and priests who are serving our St. James community, as we say a Hail Mary today. Also, say the prayer above during this time.

2.  Ch. 24:  This chapter’s focus is on the 8th Commandment which says, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor”.  What exactly does that mean?  Let’s find out.

3.  Read pages 199 & 200.

4.   Trust is the most important element to any relationship.  Think about that.  If you don’t trust someone, can they be your close friend?  You want to be known as a trustworthy person.  You should be honest, kind and truthful in your dealings with others.  That includes friends, family members, teachers, neighbors and everyone you meet.  We have talked about this in class.  You should never gossip about others’ misfortunes.  You should show compassion and concern when things don’t go right for them.  Never make fun of them or think you are better than them.  That is not the Christian way.  You should also never tell an untruth about another person.  That is a sin.  Lying about another person and ruining their reputation is a serious sin and is breaking the 8th Commandment. It is never funny or entertaining.   Commit yourself to never doing that.  Remember, we are all sinners and sometimes we do things we shouldn’t and need God’s forgiveness.  The Sacrament of Penance is there for us.  This sacrament heals our soul.

REFLEX ALERT:  Some students have not been on REFLEX at all for the month of May.  As you know from school, it only takes a few minutes to get a green light.  1.  This helps you greatly with quick recall that is essential when doing math problems especially moving into the upper grades.  2.  I am giving you credit just to go onto REFLEX 3x a week in May.   (I am changing you when I see you have 100% fluency)

Ch. 13-4     Relate Fractions to Percents

1.  I think we all know what a percent is.  For example, 25% means 25 hundredths, 25 per 100 or 25 out of a hundred.  25% written as a fraction is 25/100.  You know this.  Look at the grid on p. 422.  It shows a 100 square grid.  Read through the explanation.

This is easy if you have a denominator of 100

What if you don’t have 100 as your denominator?  You need to make an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100!

2.  Read all of p. 422 and then watch this example:

https://www.brainpop.com/math/ratioproportionandpercent/percents/

3.  Try some problems in your workbook p. 150 multiples of 4.  Answers below:

Wb p. 150 multiples of 4 answers:  4)  7%               8)   60%      12) 87/100        16) 33/100       20) 1/4       24)  1/10       28)  39/100 = 39%

4.  Remember to go on REFLEX to get credit for May 3x week.

1.  Let us remember all our intentions as we say a Hail Mary today before we begin Religion. Also, say the prayer above during this time.

2.  Read pages 193 & 194.  Think about sharing what you have with others that is discussed on the pages you just read.  Our parish has two upcoming events.  May 16th we are collecting for baby items to help those in need.  On May 22nd we are having a drive through food drive.  (More info can be found on the St. James Church website.)

Ch. 13 Lesson 2 - Proportions

1.  If you didn’t retake the test from last week and would still like to get a better grade, see the information posted on Monday.  Everyone can take the test two times.

2.  Math textbook p. 418:  Yesterday we looked at ratios.  If you have two ratios that that are equal, we call them proportions.  You can think of this in terms of baking.  Suppose you are making cookies.  If you want to double the batch, you have to make sure you do that with a proportion.  You must double everything, or the cookies will not come out the right way!

3.  Read through p. 418 and the box on p. 419.  There are some new concepts here, specifically, the cross-products rule.  It isn’t that hard, but you have to remember how to multiply fractions in the example.

4.  Watch these two videos:

https://www.brainpop.com/math/ratioproportionandpercent/proportions/

5.  Workbook p. 148:  multiples of 6 and then check your answers.

 Answers below:

Answers:  wb p. 148

PLEASE NOTE:  St. Damien is not today’s saint.  He was yesterday’s saint!  However, you should be familiar with him for two reasons.  First, he is an American saint of which we have very few.  This may be due in part because we are such a young nation, relatively speaking, compared to other parts of the world.   Second, he is a new saint having been canonized by Pope Benedict in 2009.  Listen below to learn how he served the sick.

Saint Hilary of Arles, pray for us

Saint of the Day for May 5

(c. 401 – May 5, 449)

St. Hilary was a bishop and served the Church well in France.  He gave up his wealth and privilege to dedicate his life to living out the Gospel.    How many times have we heard this road taken by the saints:  rejecting worldly pleasures for the salvation of their own soul and the souls’ of others?  Do we embrace the spiritual world over the material world?  Think about it.

MATH                 Tuesday,            April 28, 2020

Yesterday we looked at the surface area of a cube.  That was fairly easy because all 6 surface areas are the same in a cube, so you just had to find one area and multiply it by 6.  Today we will look at finding the surface area of a rectangular prism.

1.  Textbook:  p. 398.  Look at the second half of the page where finding the surface area of a rectangular prism is explained.  Please note the color similarities in the net.  You have 2 blue, 2 green and 2 orange.  You should see why they match up.  Now look at the formula at the bottom.  This should make sense to you when you look at the 3 pairs of surface areas.  So, you find one surface area and double it or multiply it by 2 and then add all 3 products together for the total surface area.

2.  Click on the link below for further explanation (please watch!):

The Last Supper

Retreat Day              Preparing for Easter

We have spent many days preparing for Easter.  The Holy Tridium begins on the evening of Holy Thursday and ends on the evening of Easter Sunday and marks the end of Lent.  You can livestream Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter liturgies from the church website.

Let us begin with the prayer that follows remembering His sacrifice on the Cross:

Prayer for Good Friday

My Most Glorious and Suffering Lord, it is Your Hour.  It is the Hour by which You conquered sin and death.  It is the Hour for which You came into this world, taking on flesh so as to offer Your precious life for the salvation of the world.

May I be with You, dear Lord, in these moments of suffering and death.  May I, like Your Mother, John and Mary Magdalene, stand at the foot of the Cross, gazing upon the perfect Gift of Love.

My suffering Lord, may I see in Your Cross the most perfect act ever known in this world.  May I see Love in its most pure form.  May my eyes and soul look beyond the blood and pain and see Your Divine Heart, pouring forth Mercy upon me and upon the whole world.

Today I kneel in silent adoration of You, my God.  I sit quietly, beholding the great mystery of our faith.  I behold God, beaten, bruised, mocked, tortured and killed.  But in this act, I see all grace and Mercy flowing from Your wounded Heart.  Bathe the world in Your Mercy, dear Lord.  Cover us with Your grace and draw us to new life through Your death.  I love You, dear Lord.  I love You with all my heart.  Jesus, I trust in You.

Religion Book

1.  Open your book to p. 225.  Start reading on the right side beginning with Holy Thursday.  Continue reading p. 226.

2.  Then read about Easter on pages 227-228.  Write a short poem on p. 228.

3.  On Good Friday say the Stations of the Cross.  They can be found on p. 243.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle

Saint of the Day for April 7

(April 30, 1651 – April 7, 1719)

RELIGION

1.  PLEASE READ:  Please take a look at your Lenten Map.  We are nearing the end of this season with Easter coming soon.  I hope you have had a good spiritual experience even though we have not been in school, and we have not been able to celebrate the liturgy together in person.  Remember, many of the faithful in times past have had similar experiences throughout history.  We are being called to keep our faith strong under these difficult days.  Make this Holy Week very special and memorable in your life.

2.  Please say our Lenten Prayer above

3.  Please watch this video (8 mins) on St. John Baptist de la Salle.  He is a well-known French saint.  I think you will find his life very interesting.  What might he inspire you to do?  Do you see any vocation for yourself after learning about St. John?  Reflect on his life today and offer a prayer to him.  St. John, pray for us.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUzW0ChEuEk

4.  Please read today’s Gospel below:

Verse Before The Gospel

Hail to you, our King, obedient to the Father;
you were led to your crucifixion like a gentle lamb to the slaughter.

Gospel – John 13:21-33, 36-38

21 Reclining at table with his disciples, Jesus was deeply troubled and testified, “Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”

22 The disciples looked at one another, at a loss as to whom he meant.

23 One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining at Jesus’ side.

24 So Simon Peter nodded to him to find out whom he meant.

25 He leaned back against Jesus’ chest and said to him, “Master, who is it?”

26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I hand the morsel after I have dipped it.” So he dipped the morsel and took it and handed it to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot.

27 After Judas took the morsel, Satan entered him. So Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.”

28 Now none of those reclining at table realized why he said this to him.

29 Some thought that since Judas kept the money bag, Jesus had told him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or to give something to the poor.

30 So Judas took the morsel and left at once. And it was night.

31 When he had left, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.

32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him at once.

33 My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. You will look for me, and as I told the Jews, ‘Where I go you cannot come,’ so now I say it to you.”

36 Simon Peter said to him, “Master, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, though you will follow later.”

37 Peter said to him, “Master, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the cock will not crow before you deny me three times.”

5.  Think about what you just read.  Judas freely betrayed Jesus.  The word “betrayed” means that you feel that someone you trusted or had faith in has done something wrong to you.  It can deeply hurt us when we feel betrayed by another person. Jesus felt a similar betrayal.  His betrayal would lead to his death on the Cross.  Have we ever betrayed someone?  Have we ever betrayed Jesus?  Think about it.  Say the prayer below:

Prayer: My dear suffering and rejected Lord, I do love You but I also know that I cause Your Heart to be troubled by my betrayal. Help me to see my sin honestly this Holy Week. In seeing it, may I let go of that which keeps me from loving You more deeply, so as to walk with You to the Cross to share in Your glorious triumph. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen

MATH         Ch. 12           Areas of Rectangles and Squares Lesson 12-6

Please note:  The Math Placement Test will give you questions you don’t know, kind of like SCANTRON Tests.  So, just do the best you can.  If you don’t know the answers, just guess and the test will adjust to your level.  This is not a grade.  However, I do need you to complete it.  Thank you.

Go to Moby Max on the Links Page and complete the Math Placement test.  Click on Math and you will be prompted to begin.  I have assigned the Placement Test for both classes.  I believe it is short.

Saint Crescentia Hoess    Saint of the Day for April 6

(October 20, 1682 – April 5, 1744)

https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-crescentia-hoess/

3.  Please read today’s Gospel below and answer the questions at the end:

Verse Before The Gospel

Hail to you, our King;
you alone are compassionate with our faults.

Gospel – John 12:1-11

1 Six days before Passover Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.

2 They gave a dinner for him there, and Martha served, while Lazarus was one of those reclining at table with him.

3 Mary took a liter of costly perfumed oil made from genuine aromatic nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair; the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.

4 Then Judas the Iscariot, one of his disciples, and the one who would betray him, said,

5 “Why was this oil not sold for three hundred days’ wages and given to the poor?”

6 He said this not because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief and held the money bag and used to steal the contributions.

7 So Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Let her keep this for the day of my burial.

8 You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”

9 The large crowd of the Jews found out that he was there and came, not only because of him, but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.

10 And the chief priests plotted to kill Lazarus too,

11 because many of the Jews were turning away and believing in Jesus because of him.

4.  Answer the following questions in your copybook:

a)  Why do you think Mary (this Mary is the sister of Lazarus and Martha)  anointed the feet of Jesus?

b)  Why do you think the crowd of Jews wanted to see Lazarus?

c)  Can you think of reason why the chief priests wanted to kill Lazarus?

d)  What would you have told the chief priests if you lived during that time?

Saint Francis of Paola, pray for us.      Saint of the Day for April 2    (March 27, 1416 – April 2, 1507)

RELIGION

1.  Please take a look at your Lenten Map.  How are you doing?  Remember to continue your Lenten promises and during these coming days of Lent do things for others around you.  We should always offer special prayers during Lent.  Please say the Lenten prayer above.

2.  Textbook: Reread pages 224 & 225.  Then read the first two sections only on p. 225 about Holy Week.  We know that Jesus enters into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.  Read the verse below from the Old Testament:

Zechariah 9:9      9 Rejoice heart and soul, daughter of Zion! Shout for joy, daughter of Jerusalem! Look, your king is approaching, he is vindicated and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

We can see that long ago, before the time of Jesus, the Jewish people expected the Savior to come into Jerusalem.  On this Sunday Jesus did just that.  That welcome, honor and praise would take a turn in the coming days.  Jerusalem would be filled with confusion, fear, and suffering.  We all know the story and the glorious ending.  Watch the video below to learn more about this day.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdyJO-_aAv8

3.   Holy Week begins on this Sunday. We will not be celebrating Palm Sunday in church this year.  We will have to watch Mass online in the interim.  Please share the following information with your parents.  The main Mass this Palm Sunday will be livestreamed @10:30 am.  Click on the link below to see our Holy Week Schedule for St. James.

MATH         Ch. 7    Lesson 10   Interpret Circle Graphs

FINISH BY THE END OF THE DAY FRIDAY.

1.  Go to p. 256 – Interpreting Circle Graphs.   Circle graphs are an easy way to look at information.  The circle graph represents fractional parts of data.  Read p. 256 carefully.  Don’t just look at the graphs, you need to read the explanation.  I think you will find this easy to understand.  You do have to remember your fraction instruction learned this year.  Math concepts are always building on prior knowledge.  Keep that in mind.

Play this video for further instruction/clarification.  If you are doing the “Optional Work”,  this will definitely help you.  Everyone should take a look.  Just do your best.

2. Do wb p. 88  #s 1-3  (Answers below)

3. OPTIONAL:   Now read the box on p. 257.  This shows you how to figure out the fractional part you might have used in a budget.  You can find out the $ amount by multiplying the fractional part used by the total annual budget.

3.  Continue to p. 313.  Remember I told you that the blue box on the second page of the lesson is sometimes harder.  On p. 313, you are being asked to round to the nearest cent which requires you to add a zero in the dividend.  We have already done this so you should be familiar with the process.  Study the blue box.  Also, remember to do short division.  No long division with single digit divisors!
