  • Reading hard back text book
  • Social Studies hard back text book
  • School library books that you have at home
  • Any borrowed Colonial Day Costume.

Every student will be given a red bag with supplies left at school, yearbooks if ordered, class pictures if ordered, any awards, and some extra special items.

Sister will send out instructions for pick up.

I want everyone to have a GREAT summer! I enjoyed our ZOOM lunch and ice cream social yesterday!

Essays: I have had so much fun reading the essays that have been sent in. Some of you have shared stories about vacations, the day you found out your mom was having another baby and special times with your family! Every essay so far has been excellent! The essays are due tomorrow!

SACRISTY TOUR ZOOM CLASS:

  • On Thursday morning (May 21)  at 9:45 , Fr. Oetjen has graciously offered to give 4th grade a virtual tour of the Sacristy. He will be explaining the sacred vessels and vestments to us. Both Mrs. Kilgallin and I will be participating in the tour. Please expect an email from me on Tuesday, explaining the specifics of this special class.

  • Religion- Chapter 23 "Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God"
  • Read page 191
  • Compare being pure of heart to a clear glass window. Read the following: Once, Saint John of the Cross said that a pure heart is somewhat like a window with sunlight streaming through it. Because of Baptism, God lives within us;our hearts have the light of God's love shining in them. When our hearts are so free from all the smudges of selfishness that we want only what God wants, we are pure of heart. Pure hearts let God's goodness and holiness shine through.

I sent an email to all of you about our ZOOM class at 2:00 PM this afternoon. We will be having Social Studies class.

Social Studies: BEFORE class today, read pages 292-297 in your SS book. We will review the causes of the Civil War. I will call on people as we discuss the following:

  • What does secede mean?
  • Which states were in the Union? the Confederacy?
  • What/ Who is an abolitionist?
  • How did the people in the South feel about Lincoln's election?
  • Who was the Confederate president?
  • What happened at Ft. Sumter?
  • Why is the event at Ft. Sumter important?
  • Who are these people : Robert E. Lee? Edmund Ruffin? Jefferson Davis?

You do not need to write out these answers but you do need to know the answers to participate in our discussion.

Religion- Chapter 22 "Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted"

  • Read page 183 . Think about these questions: What did Jesus teach us about suffering? What was Jesus' prayer when he suffered in the garden? 
  • We call Mary "Mother of Sorrows" She saw how Jesus suffered to save us from sin.That's why we ask Mary to pray for us when we have sinned. We know she wants to help us overcome our sins and love Jesus more.Mary shared the sufferings of Jesus. What do you think Mary remembered when she suffered with Jesus beneath the cross?
  • Jesus and Mary knew that God would change their sorrows into joys that would never end. That's what Jesus meant by " Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted". How did Jesus let us know that we must suffer too? What will happen if we accept our sufferings patiently?

Today we are going to start learning about decimals.

Reading- 

  • If you haven't taken the reading test, please take it.
  • This week, our story is "Moonwalk". Open your book to page 292-293.
  • Read your new vocabulary words. Look at the pictures
  • Read "Gone to the Moon"
  • Complete page 362 in your Reader workbook
  • Write your story (on the bottom of 362 and send it to me. You may type it in a word document.

Spelling - Your words this week are "related words". They come in pairs. I am going to give you 5 "pairs"

please / pleasant , image/ imagine , product/ production , meter/ metric , compose/ composition.

  • Write these words 3 x each. 
  • Complete page 364 in Reader notebook

Vocabulary- 

  • take your vocabulary test by Thursday:
  • Fold a loose leaf paper in half
  • Write your vocabulary words on the left side of the paper
  • Write the synonym or simple definition to each vocabulary word on the right side of the paper
  • Have your parent check your paper and send me the score.
  • You may ask a parent how to spell a word if you need help.

Social Studies - We will have a zoom class at 2PM on Thursday. Topic: Civil War! 

  • In your text book, Look on pages 276- 277 . Review the main topics with Mom or Dad (You do not need to write down the answers). Understand the meaning. Be able to discuss. If you have your workbook at home, complete p. 65. It is a vocabulary review. If you forgot your workbook at school, on page 276 , there is a list of Vocabulary words. Write the words and definitions on a piece of paper. Send to me!
  • Thursday we will discuss the beginning of chapter 10 and well as reveiwing the causes for the war . We will be talking about Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson and Jeb Stuart. Do you know who these men were? We will find out!

Today is Thursday, April 23, 2020

We have a 2:00 PM  ZOOM meeting scheduled for today. I sent out an email yesterday. Make sure you have the new password. The ZOOM meeting will have 2 purposes. The first will be to have a class discussion for Social Studies Chapter 9, lesson3. The second is to have a remediation session for those students who need extra help with division.

Social Studies: 

To prepare for today's ZOOM Social Studies class, Please complete page 63 in your Social Studies workbook. Answer the questions in complete sentences. For those of you who forgot your workbooks at school, here are the 5 questions. Please write your answers on loose leaf paper.

A. What factors contributed to the widespread practice of slavery in the South?

B. What effect does Eli Whitney's cotton gin have on slavery?

C. What was the Underground Railroad? Who was Harriet Tubman?

D. How did Virginians react to Nat Turner's rebellion in Southampton County?

E. Why did John Brown's actions at Harper's Ferry raise tensions between the North and South about slavery?

Please send me your answers to these questions prior to today's discussion.

Religion:

St. Francis of Assisi was Poor in Spirit. Read page 177 in your Religion book. 

Think about the answers to these questions: 

  • To what kind of family did St. Francis belong?
  • What did his father want Francis to do?
  • What did God want Francis to do?
  • What did Francis do when he saw the poor man?
  • How did Francis feel when he put on the poor man's clothes? Why?
  • Who revealed to Francis how he could show more love for Jesus?
  • How could Francis do this?
  • Why didn't Francis miss his riches?
  • With whom did he want to share God's love in a special way?
  • How would Francis bring happiness to the poor of the world?

On a piece of loose leaf , Write a reflection about St. Francis. Write about his calling to serve the poor. Write about how St. Francis shows you to view proverty. If a person has very little, are they poor (yes or no) Why or why not?

  • In your Religion book, Read page 174 , Then read page 175 and 176. On Loose leaf, answer these questions:  1. Why was Jesus happy on earth? 2. From Jesus, we learn that happiness is found in doing 2 important things. What are they? Is it possible for suffering to bring happiness? Explain your answer.. ( yes, because or No, because...)

Math : 

We are continuing with division.

  • Workbook, page 143 "estimating quotients" - You are NOT going to give exact answers for the problems on this page.ESTIMATE complete problems 1-10 
  • Here is an example: Look at #11: 427 divided by 41 ... Your answer would be : 400 divided by 40 (you are not writing the quotient)
  • skip to page 147.  Now, you are going to find the quotients! Complete problems 5,6,7,and 8 on page 147. You will need notebook paper or graph paper for these problems. There is not enough room in the workbook.

Spelling - 

  • Use each Spelling word in a GOOD sentence. Underline your spelling word. After you have underlined the word, CIRCLE the letters within the word that are silent.

I did not receive everyone's 3 branches of government presentation! Here is the original assignment from 2 weeks ago:

Social Studies-  (from yesterday) - This is due today! 

Create your own way to explain to me how our 3 branches of government work. This can be a picture, a powerpoint , a video or a chart. I will accept any form of explanation. I want to hear from you! 

Tell me : A) What is the responsibilty of each branch of government ? B) What are the checks and balances for each branch .  Tell me HOW each branch keeps the other branches  from amassing too much power,

Have fun!  You may have 2 days for this!
