5th and 6th Graders:  Prepare for a Battle of the Books!

Battle of the Books, a reading enrichment program for 5th and 6th grade students, has been waged by Arlington Diocese elementary schools for 32 years.  Next year, students from St. James will be joining the Battle for the tenth time!

Just what is Battle of the Books?  Students who join their school program read 15 books selected by a committee of Diocesan librarians, and engage in a variety of activities to enhance their understanding and appreciation of the books.  In May, each participating school sends a team of students to compete in the Battle of the Books.  The competition is similar to an “It’s Academic” event, where teams are asked questions about the books they have read.  The teams are awarded points for their answers, and the highest scoring team wins.

Beginning in September, Fifth and sixth graders who want to join in the fun will begin reading the books and meeting after school once each week, under the guidance of the librarian/teachers,  to prepare for their Battle of the Books competition in May of 2020.   If your 5th or 6th grader is an avid reader, likes the idea of a book club “on steroids,” has a competitive streak, and is willing to make the commitment, please let him/her know about this great opportunity and encourage them to come out for the St. James team.
